What is CIRT? 

The Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) brings together investigators from various Humboldt County law enforcement agencies to support member organizations in examining serious incidents.  Team members complete advanced training and accumulate hands-on experience in probing critical incidents, officer-involved shootings, and other major criminal investigations.

Our Services 

CIRT serves as a multi-agency investigative unit responsible for:

  • Independent Reviews: Conducting in-depth reviews of officer-involved shootings and other critical incidents to evaluate adherence to legal and departmental standards.
  • Multi-Agency Coordination: Working collaboratively with the Eureka Police Department, Arcata Police Department, Fortuna Police Department, Cal Poly Humboldt Police Department, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department, and the California Highway Patrol to manage complex investigations.
  • Evidence Collection & Analysis: Compiling and analyzing body-worn camera footage and other vital evidence in compliance with applicable policies and state law.
  • Reporting & Legal Support: Delivering comprehensive investigative reports to the District Attorney’s Office to support the review process and potential prosecutions.
  • Community Outreach: Facilitating clear communication with the public during and after incidents.
