Serve the Community on the County of Humboldt’s Assessment Appeals Board

County Administrative Office Posted on June 11, 2024

If you are interested in making impartial decisions on property assessment disputes in Humboldt County, consider applying to serve on Humboldt County’s Assessment Appeals Board.

The Assessment Appeals Board conducts hearings on property assessment appeals, pursuant to Section 1620 of the Revenue & Taxation Code. Acting on the basis of relevant evidence submitted at the hearing, it is their role to make a fair, unbiased decision on all property assessment disputes appealed between taxpayers and the Humboldt County Assessor.

The Assessment Appeals Board is made up of three members and two alternates, each serving three year terms. Every board member must have at least five years of professional experience in California in one of the following roles: certified public accountant, public accountant, licensed real estate broker, attorney or property appraiser accredited by a nationally recognized professional organization. Alternatively, a board member can be someone whom the nominating member of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors believes has competent knowledge of property appraisal and taxation. Appointees are not required to reside in the district of the Board member making the nomination, but all appointees must reside within Humboldt County.

Applications are currently being accepted for one member and one alternate position. Community members who meet the above criteria are encouraged to apply.

Application and Appointment Process

Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3 and can be found online on the county's Assessment Appeals Board webpage. For more information, please contact the Clerk of the Board via email at cob@co.humboldt.ca.us, by phone at 707-476-2396, or visit the office at 825 Fifth St., Suite 111, in Eureka during regular business hours.

Members of this board are appointed by a majority vote of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors. Upon appointment, new members must complete the state Board of Equalization Assessment Appeals training to become state certified. This online training must be completed within 30 days of appointment and prior to taking the board’s oath of office.

The Assessment Appeals Board meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 1:30 p.m., except in July, when it meets on the third Monday, and in August, when it typically does not meet. Occasionally, additional meetings are scheduled following a hearing. Assessment Appeals Board members receive a $40 stipend per meeting, along with mileage reimbursement.

For more information, please visit the Assessment Appeals Board webpage or call 707-476-2384.
